DAIRY PRODUCTS
There will be a number of x-ray processing applications for dairy products. Soft cheeses are good candidates to pasteurize because of the numerous occasions when these products are infected with listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium common in the food processing environment. Listeria is all too often found in products arriving from Mexico and other developing countries.
Whey products are found in food supplements and nutraceutical products for human and animals. Whey needs to be pasteurized to destroy a number of common biological agents associated with food processing, thus improving food safety and preservaton.
The development of HAACP protocols has improved the environment in which foods are commercially processed and packaged. Dairy foods adhere to these mandatory guidlines imposed upon all food processors. However, HAACP's don't provide the total answer for food safety, and less for improved food preservation. X-radiation processing in addition to the normal processing will greatly improve food safety and preservation by reducing a broad spectrum of pathogens and spoilage agents.
A major recall of Mexican style soft cheese was ordered against an Orange County, Caliofrnia company in the 1980's. Several consumers of this chesse died from food poisoning. The total cost to settle all claims reached more than $600 million dollars. Of course, the comapny went out of business during the process in the courts. Its cost for product liability insurance became astronomical.
AgSCAN Inc. will be prepared to undertake a number of experimental programs for applying x-radiation to dairy products, including evaluations for electronic cold pasteurization of raw milk.
DAIRY WASTE
AgSCAN Inc. has developed a promising process for treating animal waste to recover nearly 90% of the nitrogen from waste and nearly 70% of the phosphors from this waste. Furthermore, the process will ultimately seperate soilds from the liquid content, and x-radiate these solids to eliminate bacteria, making it suitable for sale to fertizler companies along with the recoverd phjosphors and hydrous nitrogen. AgSCAN Inc. plans to pick up waste from dairy lagoons, vacuum it into our tankers, haul it t the AgSCAN facility where it is pumped into very large stainless steel tanks, and there biologically re-act it in preparation for the remaining steps to acheive total recycling of the waste. Picking it up at the dairy, at AgSCAN's cost, will do much to help the dairy conform to EPA rules regarding disposal of waste upon open land.
Nearly 90% of animal wastes are water. Therefore, it is important to recover this water from waste, sterilize it and return it to local irrigation districts. In some agriculture areas, water is as valuable as any other item consumed in the growing of crops. And, in some areas, water is so tightly rationed as to make its availability unpredictable for some growers. Water conservation can be given a boost from our x-radiation process.
